(Connie Reynolds is the director of the Desert Angels Belly Dance Troupe, and they recently performed at the 8th Annual Riverssance Festival.) Belly dance is a fun form of exercise for adult women and men. Students will be able to improve their posture, move to the beat of music, and burn calories.

If you want to take Beginner Tribal Belly Dance, those dance lessons begin October 15^th and end November 19^th. Those classes are on Saturday mornings at the Yoga College. If you pay by October 8^th and use the following dance discount coupon, the cost will only be $65. Beginner Tribal Belly Dance will cover basic tribal dance steps, and each Saturday will feature different slow and fast movements. Students will also begin to play finger cymbals.

If you saw the Desert Angels Belly Dance Troupe at Riverssance last weekend and want to try belly dance yourself, visit the Yoga College website for information about upcoming classes.

On Saturdays at 10:30 am October 15^th through November 19^th (8:30 on October 22^nd), there will be Beginner Tribal Belly Dance lessons. Each week will be unique, and students will learn and practice a different slow move and a fast move with variations. Finger cymbals will be taught at a very basic level.

Register by October 8^th for some big discounts on these classes. If you take Beginner Belly Dance on Monday nights with Connie Reynolds, the Tribal class is only $35 (if you register and pay by the deadline). If you only take Tribal, you can still save $10 by registering and paying early.

The 8^th annual Sioux City Renaissance Festival will be the first weekend in October. The gates are open Saturday, October 1^st 10:00 am – 7:00 pm. On Sunday, October 2^nd, the fun begins at 10:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm.

Catch a Middle Eastern dance show between the jousts and other festivities! On Saturday, the Desert Angels Belly Dance Troupe will perform at the WITCC Ancient Oaks Masters Stage at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. On Sunday, the Desert Angels will dance at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.

Danza Mystique from Des Moines, Iowa will perform at Merlyn's Stage at 11:15 am and 1:00 pm, and 5:00 pm on Saturday. On Sunday, they'll dance at 11:15 am and 1:00 pm.

Both dance groups feature lovely dancers and will provide family-friendly entertainment! If you’ve never seen a belly dance performance before, check out Shira’s tips for being an appreciated audience member. If you want a good seat, come to the morning shows because there are usually less patrons at Riverside Park before noon.

At 7:00 pm on Saturday, at the Fallen Friar’s Pub, there will be a “Gypsy Party.” Pyrotic Fire Entertainment will perform a fire show; there will be also drumming and fireworks!

The Beginner Tribal Belly Dance class will cover basic Tribal dance moves as a social dance. This is not a performance based course. The emphases will be on making clear movements, following a leader, dancing to the music, and playing finger cymbals. Beginners will benefit by learning basic belly dance moves and drilling them through repetition. Intermediate dancers will focus on making their movements clear, playing zills proficiently, and improving improvisational skills. Dancers will learn new moves and combinations based on the Black Sheep Belly Dance format.

Don't say there's nothing to do in Sioux City, IA! There will be two great workshops in Sioux City on Saturday, August 20^th. At 9:30 am, guest instructor Zaia Hadiyyah will teach about Egyptian Folklore dance at the Yoga College. The last time Zaia came to Sioux City, her workshop was full so make sure you register ahead of time through the Yoga College website or call 712-224-9642. Zaia has over 15 years of experience with Oriental dance, and she’s is traveling all the way from Georgia to teach! Don’t miss this fun and informational opportunity.

At 2:00 pm, Alex Mohr will teach Middle Eastern rhythms. Alex is from Omaha and has many years of experience of drummer for belly dancers in the Midwest. Alex is a great teacher who can simultaneously teach beginners and more experienced drummers. If you have a doumbek or darkbuka bring it along, but there will be a few extras. Beginner Hoop Dance Workshop

On Saturday, September 10^th, Chelsea will be teaching Beginner Hoop Dance at the Yoga College in Sioux City. The class begins at 11:00 am and costs $35. Chelsea (Oma Hoop) is a performer and teacher from Omaha, and she will share the fundamentals of hoop dancing in this lesson. No dance experience is necessary for this workshop, and there will be extra hula hoops available to borrow and purchase.

Don’t forget about Henna 201: Temporary Celtic Tattoos this weekend on Saturday, July 30^th. This will be a fun class at the Yoga College in Sioux City, Iowa. Handouts with recipes and information will be given to participants who preregister in addition to premixed henna paste in applicator cones.

Karnak, the instructor, will teach participants how to draw Celtic knot-work in a very easy step-by-step progression. No previous drawing experience is necessary. After practicing how to draw loops, students will be able to plan out their own Celtic tattoos. With a plan, it’s fairly easy to repeat the drawing on the skin with henna.

Middle Eastern Drumming Workshop

Aex will be back to Sioux City, IA to teach another MiddleEastern Drumming Workshop! This class will be helpful for total beginners and experienced drummers because of the differentiated instruction. Alex is an amazing teacher, and the participants should be able to play a handful of rhythms before the lesson ends. Whether you want to drum for dancers, at drum circles, or just for fun, this workshop will get you started or help you develop your percussion skills.

Drum Circle Photos

The Drum Circle Social last Saturday at the Yoga College was a lot of fun. Drummers and dancers from the community came together and made the event a success! The musicians varied in skill level, but the beginners were able to play rhythms with the more experienced percussionists. Extra instruments were provided so no one was empty-handed.

The music allowed dancers of all ages to get up boogie! Most of the dancers chose belly dance movements, but there were no restrictions. All of the dancing was made up on the spot. Sometimes groups improvised, but there were opportunities for soloists to dance.

Overall, this was a great event for the whole family. Husbands drummed for their wives. Brothers and sisters played together. Friends had a chance to socialize by talking or through music and dance.

Henna 201: Temporary Celtic Henna Tattoos will be on Saturday, July 30^th at 1:00 pm at the Yoga College, 520 Nebraska Street, Sioux City, IA. The instructor will share how to draw overlapping knot-work designs in the Celtic style. The knot-work will begin at a beginning level and become more complex as the workshop progresses. Participants will be able to draw abstract overlapping designs or create zoomorphic designs. After practicing on paper, students will be able to give themselves Celtic tattoos of their own design with premixed henna in applicator cones.

Connie Reynolds’ Beginner Belly Dance is a lot of fun. Since she’s a highly certified yoga instructor, Connie teaches safe and beneficial warm-ups and cool-downs in every class. July 9th Drum Circle Social

There will be a drum jam at the Yoga College, 520 Nebraska Street, Sioux City, IA on Saturday, July 9^th. It costs only $5 to get into the Drum Circle Social. Bring a drum, any percussion instrument, or other musical instruments to play, or come to dance. If you don’t dance or drum, you can still participate by clapping along to the music!

The music will be improvised, based on common Middle Eastern rhythms such as beledi (masmoudi saghir), saidi, and ayub. Most of these rhythms are 4/4, so being able to keep a steady beat is the only requirement.

2011 MN Renaissance Festival

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is every weekend from August 20^th through October 2^nd. Each weekend is a different theme, and there is also a lot of good food, entertaining shows, and plenty of shopping.

Silk Roads, Discover the Riches is the Middle Eastern and Asian themed weekend on September 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th. The Middle Eastern Belly Dance competition will be at 5:00 pm on the Pavilion stage each day. The categories include Junior (under 16 years old), Adult (16-38), and Adult + (39 and older). Preregister by August 26^th, 2011 for free admission! The winner will get a gift certificate for Dahlal International. In the past, this contest has been very stress-free. Each competitor will get up on stage and dance for about 30 seconds. Sometimes there are judges to decide and sometimes the audience will pick by applause. Seasoned professionals have won, and so have brand-new beginners!

The Sisters of the Sahara will also perform this weekend, and so will John Khoury’s Arabic Ensemble. There will also be free belly dance lessons at the festival.

2011 Bedouin Star Bazaar

The 4th Annual Bedouin Star Bazaar and World Dance Day is July 9^th! The workshops include Bollywood Choreography with Maliaka, Cane Choreography with Ashiya, Musicality: Dancing to Music with Isis, and Stage Makeup with Ashiya. Henna 201: Temporary Celtic Tattoos

Even though henna is not native to Celtic regions, it is a wonderful material for creating temporary Celtic knot-work tattoos. Celtic designs can vary from simple to complex, and participants in this class will learn how to create various interwoven drawings.

Students will practice by following along with the teacher step-by-step beginning at the most basic level until they are confident to create Celtic designs on their own. Participants will also learn about the iconography (meaning) in their pictures. After practicing on paper, participants will have the chance to try out their tattoos with real henna.

Handouts and premixed henna in applicator cones will be provided to participants who preregister. Additional henna powder will be available for sale.

Even though the YMCA in South Sioux City, NE (Norm Waitt Siouxland Y) is closed due to flooding this summer, it doesn’t mean that you can’t workout anymore. This is the perfect time to try classes at the Yoga College in Sioux City, IA.

Beginner Yoga Technique is on Wednesdays at 6:45-7:45 pm.
Beginner II Yoga is on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:20-6:20 pm.
Intermediate Yoga is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30-6:40 pm.

If you’re interested in Beginner Tribal Belly Dance but you missed the first session, that’s okay! You can drop in to any Saturday class for $15/lesson. Just pay at the beginning of class. The Tribal class meets on Saturday mornings at 9:30 at the Yoga College every Saturday until July 9^th. Each class will be different and students will learn a slow and fast movement. Bring finger cymbals so you can learn and practice how to play them with the movements at the end of class.

Drum Circle Social

A drum circle is when a group of percussionists get together to play common rhythms and improvise. This provides an entertaining opportunity to play with other musicians, socialize, and even get up and dance! Beginner drummers as well as experienced musicians are encouraged to participate at the first Drum Circle Social at the Yoga College July 9th.

Dust off your doumbek, darbuka, or djembe and bring it to the Yoga College for an evening of fun! You can bring any percussion instrument or other musical instrument you have. All types of musicians are welcome to this event.

Dancers of all genres are welcome. This will be a nice excuse to wear new costumes and show off dance moves. Friends and family are also encouraged to join the party too!

If you’re looking for something new to try in the Sioux City area this summer, there are a lot of events happening at the Yoga College!

If you want to get away from the kids and take some time for yourself to relax, take a yoga class with a highly skilled and certified instructor on Wednesdays at 6:45 pm. If you want to take a mini-vacation in town, treat yourself to a ½ or full hour massage at any time from a certified and licensed massage therapist.
There are ongoing belly dance lessons in Sioux City too. Middle Eastern dance is a great way to work out for people who want to try out a different type of exercise. This is a unique art form that can be learned at any age. Beginner belly dance lessons are Mondays at 6:40 pm. Intermediateclasses are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:45 pm.
For the first time ever, there will be a 6-week session of Tribal belly dance lessons on Saturdays at 9:30 am. This class will begin June 4^th and end July 9^th. If you have any interest in this American style of improvised dance, sign up now! Tribal belly dance is a group social dance, so this will be a lot of fun.
On ~~Saturday, June 18^th~~, POSTPONED, Chelesea from Omaha will teach a Beginner Hoop Dance workshop at the Yoga College at 11:00 am. Adult size hula hoops will be available to borrow and to buy. Hooping is a fun way tone up and build core strength.

Remember to bring your zills to the first class too. If you don’t have any yet, many of the Desert Angels recommend Saroyan finger cymbals. They range in size, tone, and cost. Small, light-weight zills made out of brass are good for beginners.

Henna 101: Temporary Tattoo Basics

Using henna to temporarily dye skin is a tradition that goes back thousands of years. In this class, participants will learn about henna, how to mix henna paste, and how to apply it to skin and hair. Many belly dancers use henna to create beautiful tattoos on their hands, feet, and torsos.

The Henna 101 workshop will be on Saturday afternoon at the Yoga College, 520 Nebraska St., Sioux City IA. The class will begin at 1:00 pm and last about an hour and a half. It will be taught by Karnak, a local henna artist. Preregister before April 23rd, and the cost will only be $30. There will be a family discount too, so two people can attend for only $25 each.
